Professor Emeritus Kenichi Iga selected as 2022 Person of Cultural Merit
Emeritus Professor Kenichi Iga (a former university president), of Tokyo Institute of Technology, has been selected as a Person of Cultural Merit for 2022. The Person of Cultural Merit is awarded to persons to celebrate their significant contribution to the progress and development of culture.
Prof. Emeritus Iga invented a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) in 1977. He opened up “VCSEL photonics” , which has been widely used in datacenter networks and smartphones.
